Secretary-General of ASEAN, Dr. Kao Kim Hourn, on 20 August 2026, delivered a lecture at the Institute of International Relations, University of Brasília, in Brasilia, on the sidelines of his Working Visit to Brazil. With the theme “ASEAN Regionalism: Overcoming Challenges and Building a Community,” Dr. Kao highlighted how ASEAN has overcomed major challenges since its founding in 1967. While elaborating on the key elements of ASEAN Regionalism and explaining why it works, Dr. Kao underscored the key factors underpinning ASEAN’s leadership in regional affairs, as reflected in the principle of ASEAN Centrality. He stressed that ASEAN Regionalism is built on inclusiveness amidst diversity. He reaffirmed ASEAN’s commitment to fostering peace, stability, and prosperity in the region through dialogue and cooperation.
