YANGON, Myanmar — Myanmar campaigners on Tuesday denounced American lobbyist Roger Stone, a close confidante of United States President Donald Trump, for accepting $50,000 a month to “rebuild” the Southeast Asian country’s relations with Washington.
Myanmar’s leaders have been considered political pariahs in many Western nations since Feb. 1, 2021, when the military staged a putsch deposing the democratic government of Aung San Suu Kyi and triggering civil war.
The US has imposed economic sanctions targeting Myanmar’s top brass and their associates, as the nation suffered a half-decade human-rights backslide that has crushed political dissent.
